I pitched in with the daily routine. When my mother became more dependent on my sisters and I, we split up the days. I would help in the evenings, with dinner, the occasional poker and Scrabble game, and getting her ready for bed. As the years went by, I knew we needed help. I researched hospice care and convinced my sisters that we needed it. It wasn’t an easy convincing because they were sure I was saying mom was ready to die. It’s really not about that. Hospice can come in and manage pain and anxiety, and when the time came, they really helped mom die with dignity as she lived.
