Mattie from North Carolina
My story may be a little different. My mother was a caregiver for her sister, (my aunt), who had dementia, she became worse and had to be placed in a Nursing Home. In time, mother became ill with dementia, so I had to replace mother to be the caregiver for my aunt. I had to be the main person for my mother too because I was the oldest child. A short time later my husband had open heart surgery and later a spinal injury and I was a caregiver for him. Here I am three people to try to manage with some help, but I am the main person everyone is looking to for answers. My aunt died first, three years later mother died. I was caregiver then solely for my husband from 2006 until 2012, the year he died.
I am now 80 years old and feel like a bird let out of a cage. I am trying to find a little peace with myself and with God because He was the one to carry me through.
I find myself sometimes wondering will I too end with dementia, since my mother and aunt had it. And will I have someone to love and care for me the way I tried to do for my love ones ? Only God knows the answers to my questions. This is my story.
