Janet from California
The challenge came when my father passed and I began to care for my mother when my siblings abandoned her. I was her companion, her advocate, I was her go to person. I gave her 100% of my Love and she returned it by saying I Love You. I was a true believer, that everyone deserves dignity and respect no matter how old you are. My mom had to go to a 24/7 facility. I wanted my mother to know that she was important and was able with my help to make decisions. My mother always took care of her appearance. I made sure she had her clothes, make-up and her hair styled.
I was working at first, but retired and spent every day with her and late at night when she couldn't sleep. Dementia was present, but I never treated her differently. I was constant with my visits and did everything I could for her. I must tell you, the rest home was the best in S.F., compassionate, loving staff. I worked closely with the staff regarding her care, meetings, parties and attending Mass with her. She passed with dignity, love and beauty.
